Routes

Program Νο1

Day 1
Arrival in Paleochora. Settlement in your rooms and at 18:30 team meeting, when Dromolatis will give you your gear and more details about the program.
Dinner in a traditional Cretan tavern, where we will have the opportunity to discuss about the real Cretan diet and the changes at the food habits of Cretans.

Day 2
Elafonisi. A four hour hike on an easy path. We are going to pass through ancient Vienna, a beautiful church of Agios Ioannis (St.John) and a cedar forest till we finally reach the most wonderful beach of Greece (according to TripAdvisor).
The sandy beach is pink, is protected from the Natura Program, because is full of little lilies and it’s a place where the Careta-Careta turtles give birth.
We leave early in the afternoon with the boat to Paleochora and arrive at our “base”at 18:00.
Dinner with Dromolatis explaining how Cretans prepare a celebration dinner, what they cook for it and which are the “rules” in singing, dancing and drinking.

Day 3
We wake up early in the morning to go to the hills around Paleochora, where with an easy hike we can see, with Panagiotis’ help, Cretan herbs and afterwards we see “live” the herbs’ distillation.
At 14:30 we have an appointment in Agios Bar, where with Michalis we are going to learn how we can fix a cocktail with Greek distillates and Cretan herbs and of course we are going to try and make our own cocktail.

Day 4
You have the whole day free to explore Paleochora’s beaches or you can choose one of Dromolatis’ tours-guides with extra charge.

Day 5
Samaria Gorge. We leave Paleochora early in the morning for Xiloskalo, the “entrance” of Europe’s largest gorge, 16km length. Inside the gorge are more of 40 endemic plants and the famous Kri-Kri goat.
The path is medium level and all the way are resting areas with drinking water.
After six our hiking and passing the “doors”, the gorge’s most narrow place, we will arrive at Agia Roumeli beach, where we can take supplies for our trip. We are going to walk one more hour till the Agios Pavlos (St. Paul) beach, where we camp for the night.
Over there is a small tavern for those do not want to carry food supplies.

Day 6
Loutro. We leave early in the morning to the East. We can make stops at the beautiful beaches of Sfakia, Marmara and Finikas, where you can go only by foot or boat and talk about the local’s history and mentality.  
We reach Loutro and later in the evening we get back to Paleochora by boat.
In our dinner, Dromolatis is going to give you information about the 11 types of Cretan cheese: from what kind of milk are made of, how many months they mature etc.

Day 7
End of the program. Leaving gear and departure.

Program No2

Day 1

Dinner in a traditional Cretan tavern, where we will have the opportunity to discuss about the real Cretan diet and the changes at the food habits of Cretans.

Day 2
Free morning to explore Paleochora’s beaches. Departure at 15:00 with mini bus to Xiloskalo-Omalos. 2 hour hike to Kallergi refuge, one of the most beautiful and well organized refuges in Greece with remarkable view to the Samaria Gorge and the White Mountains.
Dinner at the refuge and details about next days’ routes.

Day 3
Kallergi Refuge – Mitato Pirou. Early morning departure. Medium 2 hour trekking route to Melidaou peak (2133m) where we can see the north shores of Crete.
With more 3 hours hike we arrive at Mitato Pirou, where we camp for the night. Mitato Pirou is one of the 10 shepherd’s houses in the White Mountains. If the owner is there (June-October) we can learn about shepherds’ everyday life and taste some of his brilliant cheese.
From Mitato Pirou we can walk just an hour and see the ruins of a military aircraft, which crashed in the middle ‘80’s.
ATTENTION: There is no drinking water on our way. The shepherds are drinking rain water, but it’s better to have your own or a water filter.

Day 4
Pachnes. Early morning departure again to avoid the high temperatures. In less than 3 hours we reach Rousies, where we leave our heavy gear, and take the path for Pachnes Summit (2453m), the highest peak of the White Mountains and second highest in Crete.
We go back to Rousies, where we camp for the night. There is a well with drinking water.

Day 5
Anopoli. An easy path leads us to the historical village of Anopoli, where we are going to stay in a traditional guest house and have dinner in a local tavern. Dromolatis will explain how Cretans prepare a celebration dinner, what they cook for it and which are the “rules” in singing, dancing and drinking.

Day 6
Loutro. We are going to hike for more than 6 hours today till we reach Loutro, the small village on the seaside of Sfakia. We will cross the Aradena Gorge and the beautiful beaches of Marmara and Finikas, where we can make a stop for swimming. The boat is leaving Loutro at 17:30 for Paleochora, where we are going to have dinner. Dromolatis is going to give you information about the 11 types of Cretan cheese: from what kind of milk are made of, how many months they mature etc.

Day 7
Departure day.

•The routes are demanding, with large distances without drinking water, which means that the participants have to carry gear for night camp and  their water.

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3
Fournakia. With the mini-bus we go to a place near Paleochora, where we can explore an ancient cemetery with carved graves. The findings in this area are from the primary archaic years till the 4th b.C century. Coming back to Paleochora with a stop at the village Voutas and its traditional coffee shop for a raki.
Free evening.

Day 4
Agia Irini. Early morning departure, even before sunrise, for the Agia Irini Gorge, northeast o Paleochora. It may be shorter than the famous Samaria Gorge, but for many people is even prettier, because at the biggest part we walk under perennial trees. We can also walk the “Figou Path” which women and children use to get away from the Turks with only two Cretan warriors to defend them.
Early in the evening we arrive in Sougia, where we set up our camp, swim at the beautiful beach and taste Cretan food.

Day 5
Sougia-Lissos-Paleochora. We follow the E4 path from Sougia to Paleochora and at the middle we reach the ancient town of Lissos, where 15.000 people used to live. We can explore the ancient cemetery, the ruins of the houses and the Temple of Asklipios, the god of medicine. Many people from all over Crete and the rest of Greece were visiting the temple with its thermal springs to heal.
We can have our lunch  under the olive trees and their shade and then keep going the trail to Paleochora.
Dinner with Dromolatis to find out the real Cretan diet and the changes over the centuries.

Day 6
Paleochora. With Maria’s help we are going to explore the old Byzantine churches, near the village, and their extraordinary murals.
At 14:30 we have our appointment in Agios Bar to find out how we can make cocktails with Greek drinks and Cretan herbs and have a quick “lesson” for making home-cocktails only with what we have in our fridge to surprise our friends.

Day 7
End of the program. Leaving gear and departure.

Program No 4

Day 1

Dinner in a traditional Cretan tavern, where we will have the opportunity to discuss about the real Cretan diet and the changes at the food habits of Cretans.

Day 2
Gigilos – Ahlada. Early morning departure for the Omalos Plateau with the mini-bus. From Xiloskalo we take the E4 path for mount Gigilos. We pass by a natural rocky arch, see wild cypress and the most peaks of the White Mountains from the Gigilos top.
We heading west to the Ahlada area and three hours later, we arrive to a shepherd’s house next to the one Germans bombed in 1943. Twenty more minutes hike and we arrive at our camping place.

Day 3
Ahlada-Sougia. We leave behind the rocky path and hike inside forest, full of cypress, oak and pines. Within four hours we reach the village Koustogerako and call a taxi to take us to the beach of Sougia, where we set up hour camp and swim.

Day 4
Sougia-Lissos-Paleochora. We follow the E4 path from Sougia to Paleochora and at the middle we reach the ancient town of Lissos, where 15.000 people used to live. We wake up early in the morning to go to the hills around Paleochora, where with an easy hike we can see, with Panagiotis’ help, Cretan herbs and afterwards we see “live” the herbs’ distillation.
At 14:30 we have an appointment in Agios Bar, where with Michalis we are going to learn how we can fix a cocktail with Greek distillates and Cretan herbs and of course we are going to try and make our own cocktail.

Day 7

Day 3

Gianiskari. An easy hike from Paleochora to the village of Anidri and from there through a small gorge to the beautiful beach of Gianiskari, where we can choose the sandy or the rocky side. In Gianiskari there are two canteens with snacks and some Cretan dishes.
We return to Paleochora for dinner with Dromolatis.

Day 5

Day 6
Cone and Karalis’ caves. Easy hikes to see an ancient carved cone and the caves of Karalis, where women and children used to hide from the Turks. Return to Paleochora, swimming and dinner with Dromolatis.

Returning gear and departure.
